KRLD News Radio 1080 recently featured Witherite Law Group founder Amy Witherite in a report on the need for stronger regulation of autonomous vehicle technology before expanded deployment on Texas roads.
Witherite told KRLD that current oversight has not kept pace with the rapid rollout of self-driving vehicles, leaving major safety questions unanswered.
"We have no inspections. We have no ability to see how many times human beings have to take over the operation of these vehicles. We have no access to the internal testing that is done,” Witherite said. “Without some sort of regulation, some sort of monitoring, it's left to the citizens to raise the alarm.”
The report highlights growing concerns around autonomous vehicle incidents involving first responders, flooded roads, school buses, and emergency scenes. Witherite also pointed to the May apartment fire in Oak Cliff, where a Waymo vehicle interfered with emergency response efforts and required a deputy to communicate with a remote operator.
While Witherite believes autonomous vehicle technology may eventually improve roadway safety, she emphasized that the technology is not ready for widespread expansion without stronger safeguards.
“I think self-driving vehicles will make us safer, but they're not ready yet,” Witherite said. “The technology isn't ready yet. These companies should not be allowed to test their technology on real people, on real families.”
Witherite is calling for stronger regulations, independent testing, and greater transparency from autonomous vehicle companies before further expansion continues on public roads.
